New Cutter Body Converts Bandit Grinder to Chipper
Bandit Industries is offering new cutter bodies that enable its Beast horizontal grinder to be converted to a whole tree chipper.
The company initially developed the new cutter bodies for the European wood fuel chip market, which has strict requirements for chip size and quality. The application of the new cutter bodies for the Beast proved successful.
The knives and counter-knives are attached with one bolt, so they can be changed out quickly in order to be re-sharpened.
The Beast also can be equipped with an optional thrower attachment to enable the machine to load chips into end-opening semi-trailers.
In research and development tests, a Beast model 3680 with 700 hp that was converted to chipping produced 35 tons of chips in 30 minutes from large diameter, frozen hardwood logs, according to Bandit, and with little vibration.

Wood-Mizer Opens New Sales Center in Montana
Wood-Mizer Products has opened a new authorized sales center in Basin, Montana. Rocky Mountain Wood-Mizer is managed by Sean and Debbie Sheehan.
The recent grand opening included sawmill demonstrations and an educational program.
The new Montana center is Wood-Mizer’s ninth sales center in the U.S. and 20th in the U.S. and Canada.
Wood-Mizer authorized sales centers provide potential customers with an opportunity to see sawmill demonstrations, receive training and easy access to blades and parts.

Sweed Offers New Saw For Trimming Veneer
Sweed Machinery has developed a new saw for trimming veneer. The Sweed Super Saw replaces the traditional dual end-trim and cut-back saw and can cut production time and space requirements by one-half.
The Sweed Super Saw is operated by touch screen display controls with Allen Bradley PLC. Electrical dynamic braking and a linear transducer position the saw blade, and changing the cut length takes less than six minutes. A computer ‘lock-out’ prevents the operator from making accidental adjustments while the blades are rotating.
The Sweed Super Saw is powered by a 50 hp motor. It features 12,000 pounds of load-squaring hydraulics to ensure the load is true to the end trim saw and cut-back saw, providing a clean, parallel cut every time. The saw deck, which handles 10-foot veneer stands, has an adjustable travel speed for the best result for any wood species.
The Sweed Super Saw has generous pass line height for easy cleaning and maintenance. The deck can be fully customized for light height, forklift and load. Standard outfeed storage holds up to three loads, and it has a built-in, automatic saw deck shut-down feature.

Midwest Show Back at Cape Girardeau, Mo.
The Midwest Forest Industry Show will return to Cape Girardeau, Missouri June 26-27, 2009. The biennial trade show is sponsored by the Midwest Forest Products Association.
In recent years the event has been held in St. Charles, Missouri, a suburb just west of St. Louis. Cape Girardeau is about 125 miles southeast in the southeast corner of the state.
“Upon evaluating feedback from exhibitors and attendees, we decided to return to Cape Girardeau to be closer to the timber and timber people,” said Brian Brookshire, executive director of the association.

Caterpillar Marks Expansion, Anniversary of World HQ
Caterpillar Forest Products hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony to mark the latest expansion of its world headquarters in LaGrange, Ga. The event also marked the 10th anniversary of the facility.
Caterpillar added 17,000 square feet to its headquarters, including a new office building as well as space for administration, operations and assembly.
Caterpillar opened the facility in 1997 with 50 employees working in a 117,000-square-foot facility to assemble wheel skidders. Since then, the company has moved fabrication and assembly of other forestry machines at other locations to the LaGrange facility. The world headquarters now comprises 143,000 square feet and employs more than 120 people.
The event also marked a special designation by the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), which presented Caterpillar with a plaque to recognize its safety efforts.
OSHA certified the LaGrange facility in 2007 for membership at the top ‘Star’ level of the Voluntary Protection Program. It is one of only about 2,000 U.S. worksites to achieve the safety distinction.
